MANILA, Philippines — Olympic bronze medalist Nesthy Petecio will be promoted a rank higher following his feat at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Philippine Coast Guard said.

Petecio, currently ranked as a Petty Officer Second Class in the Philippine Coast Guard’s Special Service Office, is set to be promoted to Petty Officer First Class, as announced by the PCG on Friday.

“Nesthy won a bronze medal in recognition of her feat, that is a very inspiring achievement. The Philippine Coast Guard will be promoting her to the next rank when she comes back,” said PCG commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan on Thursday.

Petecio enlisted into the PCG in August 2021.

President Marcos Jr. extended his congratulations to Petecio for securing a bronze medal at the Olympics, saying that the entire country takes pride in her performance in the boxing match.

“You’ve truly shown the world how Filipinos never back down from a challenge. The whole country is proud of you! Taas kamao, para sa boxingerong Pilipino,” Marcos said.

The Filipina boxer won bronze in the women’s boxing 57 kg semifinals after falling short with her Polish opponent Julia Szeremeta.

Petecio has joined a distinguished group of Filipino athletes who have won multiple Olympic medals, alongside gymnast Carlos Yulo, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, and swimmer Teofilo Yldefonso.

She secured a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
