Still a good knock for the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — Filipina boxer Nesthy Petecio has won bronze in the 2024  Paris Olympics women’s boxing 57 kg semifinals after falling short with her Polish opponent Julia Szeremeta.

The Filipina boxer kicked off her Paris journey with a decisive win against India’s Jaismine in the Round of 32. Followed by the defeat of French boxer Amina Zidani in Round of 16.

Her journey to the podium was sealed with a quarterfinal victory over China’s Xu Zichun, securing her a bronze medal and a spot in the semifinals.

But Petecio lost on points in a split decision against the 20-year-old Poland bet with a score of 4-1.

This achievement marks Petecio’s second Olympic medal, adding to her silver from Tokyo three years ago.

She is also the last boxer to compete for the Philippines after other bets Eumir Marcial and Hergie Bacyadan both lost their kickoff matches while Carlo Paalam exited in the quarterfinals.

In a statement, President Marcos Jr. congratulated Petecio for her bronze win in the olympics, saying the entire country is proud of her finish in the boxing match.

“You’ve truly shown the world how Filipinos never back down from a challenge. The whole country is proud of you! Taas kamao, para sa boxingerong Pilipino,” Marcos said.

This is the fourth medal for the Philippines and second bronze after fellow boxer Aira Villegas snatched the first bronze medal against Turkiye’s  Buse Naz Cakiroglu.

Carlos Yulo bagged the first two golds for the Philippines after his successful bend in the men’s artistic gymnastics.
