MANILA, Philippines — For the fifth consecutive day, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has suspended the siphoning of the remaining industrial fuel oil in the sunken tanker Terranova citing bad weather

In a message sent to reporters Friday, the PCG’s Incident Command Post said that the siphoning operation remains suspended. Friday “due to strong currents and heavy weather conditions at ground zero.”

On Thursday, PCG said that the contracted salvor Harbor Star will continue to transfer the oil waste collected inside the sunken tanker to the treatment facility in Marilao, Bulacan.

Harbor Star transferred over 402,000 liters of recovered oily waste as of Thursday at 10:30 AM this means approximately 1,218,000 liters of the 1,254,889.58 liters of recovered oil waste as of September 1 were already at the Marilao treatment facility.

The latest monitoring from the PCG said that as of September 1, a total of 1,254,889.58 liters of oily waste have been collected to the sunken MTKR Terranova.

Authorities still need to recover 145,110.42 liters of oil out of the 1.4 million liters of oil from the tanker but due to the strong current and heavy weather conditions intensified by Super Typhoon Enteng, the resumption of oil recovery operation remains unclear.

The tanker sank off the coast of Lamao Point in Limay, Bataan on July 25 due to adverse weather conditions brought about by Typhoon Carina.

The PCG also said that the salvage operation for MTKR Jason Bradley, the second tanker to sink in Bataan days after Terranova, is also suspended.
