MANILA, Philippines — Filipino workers have the worst work-life balance after Nigeria, Remote’s Global Life-Work Balance Index 2024 said.

Over 60 countries have participated in the study where the Philippines ranked 59th and is considered second with the worst work-life balance experiences  next to Nigeria under several factors.

Among the factors identified for the study in the Philippines include:

  • Total days of paid leave, including public holidays (17)
  • Percent of wage, or flat amount in sick pay (N/A)
  • Weeks paid in maternity leave (8.6)
  • Minimum wage measured in USD per hour (1.45)

  • Average hours worked per week (40.63)
  • Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer+ (LGBTQ+) community inclusivity (57)
  • Safety based on Global Peace Index (2.23)

With a score of 27.46 points out of 100, the Philippines ranked just above Nigeria, which had a score of 16.15.

Compared to our Southeast Asian neighbors, Singapore (26th), Vietnam (37th), Thailand (39th), Indonesia (43rd), and Malaysia (47th) ranked higher in the Global Life-Work Balance Index 2024.

Work-Life Balance is a serious debate in the country following the recession caused by COVID-19.

In a separate study in early 2023 said that most Filipino jobseekers prioritize finding not just stable employment but also achieving a work-life balance.

A study by employment platform JobStreet, “What Job Seekers Wish Employers Knew: Unlocking the Future of Recruitment,” revealed that at least 73 percent of Filipino jobseekers surveyed seek a stable job with work-life balance.

This figure surpasses the regional average of 71 percent and the global average of 69 percent, it said.
