MANILA, Philippines — At least 402,000 liters of oil were collected from the sunken MTKR Terranova from August 19 to 25, the Philippine Coast Guard said Monday.

In its situation report, the PCG said, citing the contracted salvor Harbor Star, that a total of 402,042 liters of industrial fuel oil are now siphoned off the sunken tanker.

The MTKR Terranova was carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil when it sank.

The breakdown of siphoned-off oil is as follows:

  • August 19 — 2,350 liters
  • August 20 — 36,100 liters
  • August 21 — 42,026 liters
  • August 22 — 81,136 liters
  • August 23 — 17,103 liters
  • August 24 — 121,724 liters
  • August 25 — 101,603 liters

Harbor Star also reported that the rate of oily waste flow during the August 25, 2024 operation was 13,614 liters per hour,  the PCG said.

The siphoning operation from two MTKR Terranova tanks to MTKR Helen Marie was temporarily halted to switch the receiving tank, it said.

The PCG also reported that BRP Sindangan (MRRV-4407) used water cannons to disperse oil sheens at the spill site, while BRP Malamawi (FPB-2403) carried out area monitoring.

The MTKR Terranova was carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil when it sank off the coast of Lamao Point in Limay, Bataan, last month.

One crew member of the 17 crew members onboard died during the incident.

MTKR Jason Bradley and MV Mirola 1

The PCG also reported that the contracted salvor for MTKR Jason Bradley, FES Challenger, continued re-sealing and patching operations of the vessel’s manhole and air vents.

The MTKR Jason Bradley was the second vessel to capsize in Bataan, just days after the MTKR Terranova.

For MV Mirola Uno, the oil spill response team reported that it monitored Morning Star’s seawater siphoning inside the vessel.

The aground vessel was the third ship to encounter trouble in Bataan.

MV Mirola Uni was now towed and moored in the Bataan shipyard, according to the PCG.
