MANILA, Philippines – Education secretary Sonny Angara said opening of classes on July 29 in seriously damaged schools will be postponed due to needed clean-up operations and fixtures following the aftermath of the typhoon-enhanced rains that massively flooded the capital region this week.

“We will have to postpone the opening of classes for some schools that suffered serious damage because of Typhoon Carina. My gratitude and appreciation to the teachers and principals who are working hard for our children. Godbless you,” Angara said in a Facebook post.

The newly-installed education chief personally inspected the condition of Masambong High School in Quezon City Friday to assess the damage caused by the heavy rains.

In an earlier post, Angara said he will issue a list of schools that would postpone opening of classes on July 29. Those with minimal damage can push with the class opening while those that sustained significant damage would not be forced to conform with the schedule.

“Some schools will really have to postpone their openings kasi maraming aayusin at lilinisin,” he said.

“Pero yung wala o minimal ang damages itutuloy pa rin ang pasukan. I’ll be issuing a list tomorrow kung saan postponed ang pasukan and the regional directors will also work with the principals to assess readiness for school opening. Hindi namin pipilitin yung mga nasalanta talaga at mahihirapan sa school opening ng Lunes,” he said.

Angara said schools in Valenzuela and Malabon are opening classes on August 5 and July 31 respectively.

“So far, ang report sakin severely damaged talaga ‘yung NCR (National Capital Region), Region IV-A, atsaka it seems Region 3 din,” he said in an interview.

“May iba na gusto talagang i-postpone ng malawakan; we cannot do it because, alam natin, what if next week may tumama na namang typhoon. So ‘yung kaya sana pumasok na sila,” he said.
