MANILA, Philippines — Manila placed 93rd out of 100 cities across the world in the 2024 Sustainable Cities Index, global consultancy firm Arcadis said.
In a report, Arcadis measured four pillars to rank the cities across the globe with four Ps namely planet, people, profit and progress.
Key data points in the SCI include air pollution, waste management, and investment in low-carbon infrastructure such as renewable energy and sustainable transportation.
The index also considers factors like economic performance, social equity, and resilience to natural disasters.
“In the 2024 index, Metro Manila ranked 93rd out of 100 cities,” Arcadis said in its report.
Manila’s highest score was in the Planet pillar (77th), reflecting efforts in emission reduction and renewable energy. But it ranked lower in the People (91st) and Profit (84th) pillars.
The Planet pillar score, Manila’s highest placement so far, reflects the Philippines’s efforts in reducing emissions and sourcing renewable energy through green policies, according to the report.
It also highlights Manila’s areas for improvement, such as air and water pollution, access to drinking water, and the availability of green spaces, it said.
The report also said Manila is classified as a “City lacking momentum” in the Progress pillar, indicating significant challenges and limited advancement in sustainability initiatives in recent years.
