MANILA, Philippines – State seismologist observed a pronounced ground swelling on the edifice of Mt. Kanlaon for the past month suggesting increasing chances of an eruptive activity.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned the public that the Kanlaon in Negros island remains to be on alert level 2 which means an increasing unrest prevails over the volcano which could lead to hazardous or explosive eruptions.

Just last June 3, the volcano had a major eruption that sent a three-mile ash plume into the sky causing the evacuation of hundreds of residents and cancellation of flights.

“Kanlaon has been undergoing slow but sustained inflation or swelling since 2022 based on continuous GPS and electronic tilt measurements, indicating long-term pressurization within the volcano,” Phivolcs said in its advisory.

The 4-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone of Kanlaon volcano remains off-limits to anyone to minimize injury or damage from potential volcanic hazards.
