MANILA, Philippines — Makati City Mayor Abby Binay said Friday that the now-viral “Gil Tulog Avenue” signage  did not reach her office for approval following the sudden change of the banner in the city.

In a statement,  Binay said the change for the street signage was for a marketing advertisement, however, the request for a permit did not reach her office.

“It is unfortunate that the request for a permit for the so-called advertising campaign to change the street signs of Gil Puyat Avenue did not reach my office. Kung dumaan sa akin yan, rejected yan agad,” she said.

On Thursday, several commuters took to social media and aired their confusion following the change of street sign in the area.  The viral street signage was replaced from Senator Gil Puyat Avenue” to “Gil Tulog Avenue.”

This caused a massive discussion online regarding the permit approvals within the city following the confirmation that the putting up of “Gil Tulog Avenue” was a marketing stunt  of a sleeping pill, with other users dragging other agencies for the replacement of the street sign.

Binay said that officials should practice “prudence” and be more “thorough” in exercising their mandates adding that aside from the chaos it may have caused the commuters, they should also respect the family of former Senate President Gil Puyat.

“Dapat inisip ang kaguluhan na maaaring idulot sa mga motorista at komyuter. At dapat ay binigyang halaga ang respeto sa pamilya at sa alaala ni dating Senate President Puyat,” she said.

The officials who issued the permit for the advertisement have now been reprimanded, according to Binay.

Binay likewise apologized to the family of former Senate President Puyat and said the street sign has now been stripped off in the area.
