MANILA, Philippines – THREE former Vice Presidents snubbed the invite to attend the upcoming third State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. this coming July 22 at the House of Representatives.

According to House Secretary-General Reginald Velasco, the three former second highest leaders are Leni Robredo (2016-2022), Jejomar Binay (2010-2016) and Noli De Castro (2004-2010).

In an interview, Velasco said Robredo and Binay have already sent their official notice of regret while De Castro has yet to send his but has already decided not to participate in the SONA.

Velasco said the House automatically sends invites to former high-ranking officials of the government but they are always free to decide to go or not.

“Alam mo naman, wala naman pilitan dito sa SONA eh (We don’t force anybody to attend the SONA). It’s based on your desire whether you want or you don’t want,” he said.

The deadline for the confirmation of attendance according to Velasco was last June 25.

Incumbent Vice President Sara Duterte, who has just quitted the Marcos cabinet over tensions between the Dutertes and the Marcoses, has not confirmed yet either.

Velasco noted that over 99% of SONA 2024 invitees have already confirmed their attendance.
